Decolonizing Love: A Movement towards Inclusivity and Cultural Awareness

Updated: Mar 8, 2023

As winter lingers on and the frigid-ness of the season sets in deeper, many of us may be feeling a bit drained and in need of some extra TLC. During this time, it can be helpful to take a step back and reflect on what we give our attention to. As I continue to revisit and review my own experiences, I've gained insight into the power of self-love and the importance of making it a daily ritual. Self-love is a crucial aspect of overall wellness and happiness. By embracing self-care practices such as mindfulness, gratitude, physical activity, and self-affirmations, we can cultivate a strong sense of self-worth and self-care that will benefit us for years to come.

In this blog post, we'll explore alternative ways to celebrate love and renewal, such as community service, eco-friendly adventures, and indigenous spiritual practices, as well as the importance of decolonizing our understanding of love. We'll also be inviting you to join us for an afternoon of self-discovery and inner peace at "The Fires of Love" guided visual meditation event. So, let's warm up from the inside out and embrace self-love as a daily ritual. Join us as we explore the power of self-love and celebrate this inclusive and powerful emotion in its purest form.

Valentine's Day is a holiday that is celebrated around the world to commemorate love and affection between intimate partners. However, this holiday has roots in colonialism and cultural appropriation, and has been criticized for perpetuating harmful stereotypes and for excluding marginalized communities.

The origins of Valentine's Day can be traced back to ancient Rome, where it was celebrated as a pagan festival called Lupercalia. This festival was later co-opted by the Catholic Church and transformed into a Christian holiday to honor Saint Valentine, a martyr who was executed for performing marriages in secret during a time when the Roman Empire prohibited them. Here is another source to learn more about the festival.

Over time, Valentine's Day has become commercialized, with the sale of chocolates, flowers, and other gifts being a major aspect of the holiday. However, this commodification has often reinforced damaging stereotypes, such as the notion that women are passive and dependent, and that men are expected to express their love through material gifts.

In recent years, there has been a growing movement towards decolonizing Valentine's Day and making it more inclusive and culturally aware. This involves recognizing the holiday's roots in colonialism and cultural appropriation, and working to create alternative celebrations that are more representative of the diverse cultures and experiences of people around the world.

One way to decolonize Valentine's Day is to celebrate it in a way that is meaningful to you and your loved ones, rather than relying on the cultural norms and expectations that are often associated with the holiday. This can involve taking a step back from the commercial aspects of the holiday, and focusing on meaningful acts of love and affection, such as spending quality time together or expressing gratitude for one another.

Another way to decolonize Valentine's Day is to acknowledge and celebrate the love and relationships that exist outside of traditional romantic partnerships, such as the love between friends, family members, and community members. Love Across Borders, is a holiday that recognizes and celebrates the love and affection between people of different cultures and backgrounds.

Decolonizing Valentine's Day is an important step towards creating a more inclusive and culturally aware society. By recognizing the holiday's roots in colonialism and cultural appropriation, and by creating alternative celebrations that are more representative of the diverse experiences and cultures of people around the world, we can work towards a holiday that truly celebrates love and affection in all its forms.

Here are some alternative ways to celebrate love and renew relationships outside of the typical Valentine's Day norm:

Nature Excursion: Spend time together in nature, take a hike or have a picnic in the park. This is a great way to disconnect from technology and spend quality time together while enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.

Cook together with those you care about: Dig if you will the picture… Of gathering those you care most about together for a beautiful day or evening creating dishes that you've always wanted to try, paired with an amazing playlist, and voila! Not only will you have fun learning something new, but you'll also have a delicious meal to enjoy together.

Game Night: Have a fun “night in” playing board games or card games. This is a great way to relax, unwind and enjoy each other's company.

Volunteer Together: Give back to the community by volunteering together at a local organization. This is a great way to show love and appreciation for each other, as well as for those in need.

At Home Spa Day: Treat yourselves to a relaxing spa day and pamper yourselves with massages, facials, and other spa treatments without leaving your home. Oh what ways to utilize your imagination in creating a sacred magical space in your home.

Artistic Expressions: Visit an art museum or attend a concert or play. This is a great way to enjoy each other's company while also experiencing new forms of art and culture, especially those artists who are in your community, and may be marginalized.

By incorporating these alternative celebrations, you can create new and meaningful experiences that will strengthen your bond and renew your love for those you care for, and those in your community who you may build lasting relationships with. The important thing is to do what feels right and meaningful for you and your loved ones, and not to feel pressured to conform to societal norms and expectations.

Give these alternative ways of celebrating love and renewing relationships while also giving back to the earth and incorporating spiritual practices:

Community Service: Participate in a community service project that focuses on environmental conservation and sustainability. This can include cleaning up a local beach, planting trees, or helping to maintain a community garden.

Spirituality in Nature: Engage in indigenous spiritual practices such as meditation, or prayer in nature. This can help to connect with the earth and experience the spiritual energy of the natural world.

Eco-Friendly Adventure: Take an eco-friendly adventure together, such as kayaking, camping, or hiking. This is a great way to experience the beauty of nature and reduce your carbon footprint.

Support Indigenous Communities: Visit an indigenous community and learn about their cultural and spiritual practices. You can also support their efforts by purchasing locally made artisanal products or supporting their conservation initiatives.

Green Living: Adopt eco-friendly habits and make conscious choices to reduce your impact on the environment. This can include reducing your energy and water usage, recycling, and using sustainable products.

Plant a Garden: Plant a garden together and grow your own fruits and vegetables. This is a great way to connect with the earth and experience the satisfaction of growing your own food.

Volunteer with Animals: Volunteer at a local animal sanctuary or wildlife rescue center. This is a great way to give back to the earth and help protect the animals that call it home.

By incorporating these alternative celebrations, you can renew your love for each other, and all sentient beings while also giving back to the earth and incorporating indigenous spiritual practices. It's important to find a balance between self-care and community service, and to approach these celebrations with an open mind and a respectful attitude towards indigenous cultures and traditions.

Self-love is an important aspect of overall wellness and happiness. Here are some examples of self-love practices that can be made into daily rituals:

Self-Care: Take time each day to engage in activities that make you feel good. This can include things like a hot bath, reading a book, or getting a massage.

Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness meditation each day to become more present and aware of your thoughts and feelings. This can help to reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

Gratitude: Spend time each day reflecting on the things you are grateful for. This can be done through journaling, speaking with a loved one, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the good things in your life.

Physical Activity: Engage in physical activity each day, such as yoga, exercise, or dance. This can help to improve physical health, as well as boost mood and self-esteem.

Nourishment: Make sure to eat nutritious, wholesome foods each day to support overall health and well-being. This can include incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet.

Self-Affirmations: Say positive affirmations to yourself each day to boost self-confidence and self-worth. This can include things like "I am worthy and deserving of love and happiness," or "I am capable and strong."

Self-Exploration: Set aside time each day to engage in self-exploration and self-discovery. This can include journaling, therapy, or exploring new hobbies and interests.

Re-ignite the passion that embracing your sensuality can bring: The “thrill” may be gone, but through taking time to connect to your sensual nature, you will soon begin to feel the flames of passion that resides within you.

Making self-love a daily ritual is essential for maintaining good mental and physical health. By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you can cultivate a sense of self-love and self-care that will benefit you for years to come.

In conclusion, it's important to celebrate love every day, not just on Valentine's Day. The commercialization of love can detract from the true essence of this powerful emotion, which should be inclusive and accessible to all, regardless of the need to purchase gifts. By focusing on alternative ways to express love and renewal, such as community service, eco-friendly adventures, and self-care practices, we can keep the focus on love as a basic emotion that is meant to be celebrated every day.

Self-love is also an essential aspect of overall wellness and happiness. By making self-love a daily ritual, through practices such as mindfulness, gratitude, physical activity, and self-affirmations, we can cultivate a strong sense of self-worth and self-care that will benefit us for years to come.

Let's celebrate love in its purest form, and make every day a celebration of this inclusive and powerful emotion. By doing so, we can strengthen our relationships, improve our well-being, and connect with the earth and each other in meaningful and sustainable ways.
